Accelerated and One-Year MHA Programs

Are There 1 Year MHA Programs Online?

Yes, 1 year MHA programs online exist, including the University of Saint Francis-Fort Wayne (27 credits, 1 year), LSU Shreveport (30 credits, an estimated 12 months full time) and Touro University Worldwide (1 year full time), and West Coast University lists an 8-month Accelerated Plus pace. This site tracks 78 accelerated or one-year programs at 67 schools, 56 of them online, with estimated tuition from $9,660 to $91,270 and a median of $22,680. A one-year pace means a full-time course load, so compare the program matcher results against the hours you can really give it.

Which 1 Year MHA Programs Online Count as Accelerated

A program lands on this page when the school itself publishes a pace of about a year, or labels the program accelerated, fast track or one-year. That covers four different designs, and they aren’t interchangeable:

  • Short programs. Fewer credits, finished in a year. The University of Saint Francis-Fort Wayne’s MHA is 27 credits over 1 year. LSU Shreveport’s online MHA is 30 credits, an estimated 12 months full time.
  • Compressed terms. A standard-length degree taught in 5-, 7- or 8-week courses. American InterContinental University runs its 45-credit healthcare management master’s in 5-week courses and says about one year.
  • Multiple paces. One program, several speeds. West Coast University offers 8 months (Accelerated Plus), 12 months (Accelerated) or 20 months (Working Professional). William Carey University offers a one-year or two-year plan, including summer terms.
  • Competency-based. You move on when you show mastery. University of Phoenix’s competency-based MHA runs in 16-week terms and takes less than 12 months.

The set also includes programs labelled accelerated that take longer than a year, such as MUSC’s online MHA at 5 semesters accelerated (about 1.5 years) and IU Indianapolis at 18 months full time.

Who a One-Year MHA Suits

A one-year MHA suits you if you can study close to full time for twelve months, or if you already work in health care and your employer backs a heavy schedule. It also suits clinicians moving into management who don’t want a two-year detour.

It’s harder if you’re new to health care. The fastest online programs mostly end in a capstone course rather than a supervised placement, so you’d finish with the degree but little management experience. Several one-year programs also screen for experience up front, as the section on entry rules below shows.

Accelerated MHA Programs by the Numbers

The 78 programs sit at 67 schools in 35 states. Of them, 56 are offered online, 20 on campus and 17 in a hybrid format. The median program is 36 credits, against 39 across all 452 programs on the site, so most accelerated programs save a few credits and make up the rest of the time through pacing.

Estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees, or the school’s published total) runs from $9,660 to $91,270, with a median of $22,680. Per-credit rates run from $230 to $2,000.

22 of the 78 are covered by CAHME accreditation. 37 either need no GRE or GMAT or waive it under stated conditions.

One-Year MHA and Healthcare Management Programs Compared

Saint Louis University MSHA Online 39 As few as 12 months $42,000 No
UCSF MS-HAIL Hybrid 36 12 months $64,470 No

The most affordable one-year options are public or low-rate private schools with 27 to 36 credits. The expensive end is a different product: UCSF’s $64,470 program fee buys a hybrid format with three on-campus intensive sessions and a quality improvement project in your own workplace.

The Workload Behind a One-Year Pace

A year is a real sprint. Touro University Worldwide spells it out: two courses per term for six consecutive terms. California Baptist says 12 months with a full-time course load. William Carey’s one-year plan runs three semesters including summer.

Programs with more than one pace let you change your mind. Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s MBA in Health Care Administration says most students finish within 19 months, with a Fast-Track option in 11 to 15 months. The University of Southern Indiana’s MHA runs 1-2 years in 7-week terms at an accelerated or standard pace. MUSC’s online MHA is 8 semesters standard (about 3 years) or 5 semesters accelerated (about 1.5 years), at $705 per credit hour either way.

If you work full time, look for the program’s own words about employment. UCSF requires you to stay employed in a healthcare organization during the program. Dartmouth’s MHA is built for professionals with two to 10 years of work experience and offers a 24-month standard track beside its 12-month accelerated track.

Entry Rules for Fast MHA Programs

Several of the quickest programs are closed to career starters:

Others are open to anyone with a bachelor’s. Indiana University-Bloomington says work experience isn’t required and the program is open to current undergraduates through mid-career professionals. LSU Shreveport uses experience as an alternate route: three years of professional work experience qualifies applicants with a 2.5-2.99 GPA. If you’re mid-career, the executive MHA programs page covers the experience-gated route in more depth.

CAHME-Accredited Accelerated Programs

22 accelerated programs are covered by CAHME accreditation. CAHME accredits graduate healthcare management programs against measurable, competency-based criteria, and it reviews MHA, MS and MBA programs alike. The fastest CAHME options include:

Fordham’s 1-year MSHA is on the CAHME list with a probation flag, so check its current status with the CAHME checker. The full set of accredited programs is on the CAHME-accredited MHA programs page.

When “Accelerated” Still Means Two Years or More

Some residency-based programs use the accelerated label for a compressed coursework phase followed by a long placement. Johns Hopkins’s MHA is one year of coursework followed by an 11-month compensated residency. Trinity University’s MS is 16 months of coursework plus a 12-month paid, full-time administrative residency, with total program tuition of $90,000. UAB’s residential MSHA runs 21 months of courses plus a 9-12 month paid residency.

Those programs aren’t one-year degrees, but they solve the problem the one-year programs leave open: you finish with a year of paid, supervised management experience. If you’re new to health care, a residency may do more for your first job than a faster finish.

What You Study on a Compressed Schedule

The subjects don’t shrink with the calendar. Concentrations offered in this set include Operations Management and Health Informatics at Touro University Worldwide, Leadership, Health Informatics and Aging Services at the University of Southern Indiana, and Informatics, Organizational Leadership, Project Management and Public Health at West Coast University. California Northstate University, which offers a 1-year track alongside its standard pace, lists Leadership, Analytics and Intelligence (A.I.) and Service Excellence.

Most online one-year programs finish with a capstone: University of Arizona’s MGMT 528 field project delivers work for a healthcare organization, and Northern Kentucky’s HCA 691 capstone includes on-site experience under a qualified preceptor.

Accelerated MHA vs a One-Year MBA or MS

If a year is the goal, the degree title matters less than it seems. The median estimate is $23,850 for accelerated MHA-family programs, $19,200 for the MS and $27,900 for the MBA. One-year MBA options include Culver-Stockton College (1 year, $515 per credit plus a $15 fee), UNC Wilmington (as few as 12 months, $20,257 total for North Carolina residents) and Western Governors University (as little as 12 months at $4,850 per six-month term).

Pick the MHA if you want to run clinical operations or a health system department. Pick the MBA if you want a business degree that transfers across industries. The degree chooser and the MHA vs MBA guide walk through that call.

How to Choose a One-Year Program

  • Count your weekly hours. A one-year pace at Touro means two courses at once, every term, for six terms.
  • Pick a program with a slower gear. West Coast, Mount Vernon Nazarene, USI and MUSC all publish a standard pace you can drop back to.
  • Check the entry rules first. Phoenix, Cal State Long Beach and UW-Milwaukee each require years of experience.
  • Decide whether you need CAHME. Dartmouth, Suffolk, Gannon, IU-Bloomington and Clarkson offer it on a one-year schedule.
  • Price the whole program. LSU Shreveport and Saint Francis-Fort Wayne come in at $14,850 or less in estimated tuition, and UCSF and Dartmouth run from $64,470 to $91,270.
  • Plan your experience. If you have none, choose a program with a practicum, or read the MHA requirements guide to see what schools expect.

Cost is its own question, covered on the most affordable online MHA programs page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Fastest Online MHA?

West Coast University's online MHA lists an 8-month Accelerated Plus pace for its 30 credits, alongside a 12-month Accelerated pace and a 20-month Working Professional pace. Its tuition is $795 per credit, or $23,850 total.

Can You Work Full Time in a One-Year MHA?

Some one-year programs are built for it and some aren't. UCSF's 12-month MS-HAIL requires you to stay employed in a healthcare organization throughout. Touro University Worldwide's one-year pace means two courses per term for six consecutive terms, which is a heavy load beside a full-time job.

Is There a One-Year CAHME-Accredited MHA?

Yes. Dartmouth's MHA has a 12-month accelerated track, Suffolk University's MHA runs as few as 12 months full time, Gannon University's MHA runs 1 year full time and Indiana University-Bloomington's online MSHM takes about 1 year full time. Fordham's 1-year MSHA is on the CAHME list with a probation flag.

Do Accelerated MHA Programs Cost Less?

Not by rule. The most affordable accelerated estimate is $9,660 at Universidad Ana G. Méndez, and the highest is $91,270 for Dartmouth's 12-month MHCDS. Finishing faster saves you months of living costs and lost time, not necessarily tuition.

Is There a One-Year MBA in Healthcare Management?

Yes. Culver-Stockton College lists 1 year in an accelerated format, UNC Wilmington's online MBA in Healthcare Management takes as few as 12 months, and Western Governors University says as little as 12 months at $4,850 per six-month term.

Do Accelerated Programs Skip the Residency?

Most online one-year programs end with a capstone instead of a residency. Residency-based programs can still carry an accelerated label: Johns Hopkins's MHA is one year of coursework followed by an 11-month paid residency.
