What Counts as a Master’s in Healthcare Management

A master’s in healthcare management is any graduate degree that trains you to run the business side of health care: finance, operations, staffing, quality and strategy. The phrase describes a focus, not a single degree. Across the 126 programs on this page you’ll find five kinds of diploma:

  • MBA with a healthcare management concentration (59 programs)
  • MS or MA in healthcare management (32 programs)
  • MHA or a management-titled equivalent, such as the University of Arizona’s Master of Healthcare Management or Michigan’s Executive Master’s in Health Management and Policy (22 programs)
  • MPH in health management or health care management (7 programs)
  • MPA with a health care management track (6 programs)

Which letters you end up with shapes what the program costs, how long it runs, and whether it’s covered by CAHME, the accreditor for graduate healthcare management education.

Healthcare Management Degrees Compared by Type

This is the table to read before any ranking, because the same title hides very different programs.

Degree type Programs CAHME-covered Online Median credits Median estimated tuition
MBA 59 5 43 36 $26,640
MS or MA 32 4 24 33 $25,200
MHA and equivalents 22 9 13 39 $28,800
MPH 7 3 2 45 $25,620
MPA 6 1 3 42 $53,970

Estimated tuition means the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees.

Three patterns jump out. The MHA-type programs have the most CAHME coverage by far, 9 of 22. The MBA and MS versions are the most likely to run online and the shortest, at medians of 36 and 33 credits. And the public-health and public-administration routes are longer, at 45 and 42 median credits, because they carry a full MPH or MPA core alongside the management courses.

How These Degrees Differ From an MHA

An MHA is designed around health care organizations from day one, and CAHME accredits programs against competency-based criteria for healthcare leaders. The other degree types start from a different core: business for the MBA, public health for the MPH, government and nonprofits for the MPA. That’s the trade. An MBA travels further outside health care. An MPH suits you if population health and prevention are part of the job. An MHA fits best if you want to manage hospitals, clinics or health systems. If you’re weighing two of these, the MHA vs MBA and MHA vs MPH pages go head to head.

Who a Master’s in Healthcare Management Suits

Career changers who need flexibility. 85 of the 126 programs run online. Touro University Worldwide runs a 36-credit online program in 1 year full time at $500 per semester credit. American InterContinental University runs a 45-credit Master of Healthcare Management in about one year with 5-week courses.

Working managers who want a stronger credential. The University of Michigan’s Executive Master’s Program in Health Management and Policy is CAHME-covered, hybrid and 20 months long, at about $54,000 for Michigan residents or $90,000 for nonresidents in tuition and fees.

Physicians and senior clinicians. Harvard’s Master in Health Care Management is for mid-career physicians and dentists in managerial or leadership roles. Vanderbilt’s Master of Management in Health Care runs 12 months part time and looks for at least five years of relevant experience.

What a Master’s in Healthcare Management Costs

Across the 75 programs with an estimate, estimated tuition runs from $9,660 to $125,510, with a median of $28,800. Per-credit rates run from $230 to $2,887, with a median of $737.23.

The low end includes Universidad Ana G. Méndez in Puerto Rico at $230 per credit hour ($9,660 for 42 credits), Athens State University at $390 per credit hour online, and the 30-credit Culver-Stockton College online MBA at $515 per credit hour plus a $15 per credit hour fee. Here’s how the range looks across degree types, from a 30-credit online MHM to executive and big-city programs:

Program Degree Format Credits Estimated tuition CAHME
University of Arizona Master of Healthcare Management MHM Online 30 $30,000 No
George Mason University MHA (online) MHA Online 39 $34,905 Yes
Oregon Health & Science University MPH in Health Management and Policy MPH Campus 60 $29,160 (resident) Yes
Hofstra University MHA (online) MHA Online 48 $87,648 No
NYU MPA, Health Services Management MPA Campus 45 $116,595 Yes
University of Miami Executive MBA in Health Management & Policy MBA Campus 42 $121,254 Yes

Note the Hofstra pair. Its in-person MHA is covered by CAHME and its online MHA isn’t, at the same $1,826 per credit hour. CAHME coverage belongs to a specific program, not to a school, so check the exact version you’ll enroll in with the CAHME checker.

Online Master’s in Healthcare Management: What the Formats Look Like

“Online” covers several very different schedules, so read the course calendar before you compare prices.

  • One course at a time. George Mason University’s online MHA runs 8-week courses taken one at a time, at $895 per credit whether you live in Virginia or not. That flat rate is unusual for a public university.
  • Short accelerated terms. The University of Rhode Island’s MS in Healthcare Management uses 7-week accelerated courses at $875 per credit plus fees. American InterContinental University uses 5-week courses.
  • Part-time over two years. Ohio University’s online MHA runs 2 years part time, with $25,200 in total tuition for Ohio residents at $700 per credit hour. Ohio University awarded 136 master’s degrees in health administration fields in 2022-23.
  • Online with a few trips. La Sierra University’s online MBA for working professionals adds two in-person residential conferences over 21 months, and costs $24,000 in tuition including a scholarship.

If you work shifts, the one-course-at-a-time model is the easiest to fit around a rotating schedule. If you want to finish fast, the accelerated terms get you there, but you’ll carry a full load every few weeks. The online MHA programs list covers the MHA side of the same choice.

What You’ll Study

Concentration names across this group show where programs point you. Common ones include Health Informatics, Health Data Analytics, Population Health Management, Quality Management and Patient Safety, Health Care Supply Chain Management, Long-Term Care Administration, Senior Services, and Health Finance. A few are narrow: the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences MHA offers a Medical Laboratory Management specialization for people with at least 3 years of laboratory work experience, and UT Dallas offers Healthcare AI Innovations and Technology.

The capstone tells you how applied a program is. Arizona’s MGMT 528 field project delivers a project for a real healthcare organization. Universidad Ana G. Méndez ends with a final project building a health services evaluation model. The University of La Verne MHA includes field work or an internship.

Residencies and Work Experience Requirements

Only 28 of the 126 programs list a residency, internship, practicum or capstone. Where there’s a real placement, it’s usually an MHA or MPH:

  • UAMS runs a full-time 10-week summer residency, or a management project if you already work full time in health care.
  • George Mason requires a capstone practicum with an industry preceptor.
  • Yale’s MPH in Health Care Management requires an Applied Practice Experience, which an approved internship can fulfill.
  • OHSU’s MPH requires a 4-credit Applied Practice Experience.

Experience requirements range from none to a lot. Indiana University Bloomington opens its online MS to current undergraduates. Cal State LA asks for at least 6 months of healthcare work experience. The University of Michigan-Flint’s online MS asks for two years of post-baccalaureate experience showing leadership or supervision in health care. Harvard’s MPH in Health Management (45-credit version) asks for 5 or more years of relevant health experience with a bachelor’s degree.

Jobs and Pay

The job at the end of most of these degrees is medical and health services manager. Per BLS, these managers plan, direct and coordinate health services, and may manage an entire facility, a clinical department or a physician group practice. The median annual wage was $123,860 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $73,390 and the top 10 percent over $224,340. BLS says most people enter with a bachelor’s and that top executive roles may require a master’s. More on the roles is in the careers guide.

How to Choose a Master’s in Healthcare Management

  • Pick the degree letters first. If hospital leadership is the goal, the MHA-type programs give you the most CAHME options: 9 of 22 here. If you want business mobility, see the MBA in healthcare management list. For lower cost and online flexibility, see the MS in healthcare administration.
  • Confirm CAHME for the exact program. Hofstra’s online and in-person MHAs show why.
  • Price the whole degree. Per-credit rates run from $230 to $2,887. Put your shortlist into the cost calculator.
  • Check the credit count. A 30-credit MHM and a 60-credit MPH are very different commitments.
  • Look for a placement if you’re new to health care. UAMS, George Mason and OHSU build one in.
  • Use a filter. The program matcher narrows by format, cost and test policy, and the broader healthcare administration degree guide explains the bachelor’s-to-master’s path.
