How Many MHA Programs Are There?

There are 452 MHA programs and related healthcare administration master’s degrees on this list, at 312 schools. Every program was checked on the school’s own website in September 2026 for format, credits, tuition, test policy, work experience and field requirements.

Not every one is called an MHA. The list counts 216 programs with an MHA-style title (MHA, MHSA or MSHA) at 167 schools. It also includes 126 MBAs with a healthcare concentration, 94 MS degrees, 9 MPH degrees and 7 MPA degrees, because people searching for master of health administration programs compare them all. They lead to the same management jobs, but they aren’t interchangeable: 122 of the 216 MHA-titled programs are on the CAHME accredited list, against 8 of the 126 MBAs.

What the MHA Programs Have in Common, and Where They Split

Many programs look alike on paper: around 39 credits and a capstone at the end. The splits that change your decision are these.

  • Format. 294 programs can be taken online, 147 on campus and 98 in a hybrid mix. Many schools run more than one version.
  • Price. Estimated tuition runs from $8,460 to $125,510, with a median of $27,000 across the 283 programs where it can be estimated.
  • Field experience. 155 programs build in a residency, internship, practicum or field experience. The rest end with a classroom or project capstone.
  • Admission. 202 programs don’t require the GRE or GMAT or let you waive it. Work-experience rules range from none to five years or more.
  • Accreditation. 143 programs at 105 schools are on the CAHME list.

The Largest MHA Programs Are Mostly Online

The ranked list below sorts programs by the number of master’s degrees each school awarded in health administration fields in 2022-23, from federal IPEDS data. Size tells you a school has a big alumni base and a well-worn online platform. It doesn’t tell you quality, cost or accreditation.

Look at the top 15 and a pattern jumps out. Fourteen of them can be completed online. Western Governors University leads with 1,796 awards and charges a flat $4,995 per six-month term. The only campus-only program in the group is the Johns Hopkins MHA, with 269 awards and an 11-month compensated residency. Only three of the 15 are on the CAHME list: the University of Phoenix online MHA, Johns Hopkins and Purdue University Global.

How this list is ranked: most master's degrees awarded in health administration fields in 2022-23 first (U.S. Department of Education, IPEDS; CIP codes 51.0701, 51.0702 and 51.0718). Size tells you how established a program is and how many classmates and alumni you'll have, not how good it is for you. Some schools report their MHA under business or public administration codes, so they don't appear here.

All 452 Programs

Filter by format, accreditation, admission tests and state; tick up to three programs to compare them side by side.

452 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed September 2026. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; "resident rate" means the school charges nonresidents more. CAHME status comes from CAHME's accredited-program list.

How to Narrow 452 MHA Programs to a Shortlist

Start with the filters that knock out the most programs, then compare what’s left on cost.

  • Decide online or campus first. It’s the biggest single split, and it decides whether a residency is realistic. An online program lets you keep your job, and a campus program usually means a summer internship or a year-long residency.
  • Decide whether CAHME matters to you. If you’re aiming at hospital or health system leadership, filter to the 143 programs on the CAHME-accredited list. If you’re already a manager and want the credential fast, programs off the list widen your options on price and speed.
  • Check your experience against the minimum. Executive tracks screen hard. The University of Phoenix competency-based MHA asks for three years of healthcare leadership or management experience in the past 10 years. Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences says no prior health care experience is required.
  • Price the whole degree, not the credit. A low per-credit rate on a long program can cost more than a higher rate on a short one. The cost calculator adds fees for you.
  • Confirm the rate applies to you. Public schools often charge non-residents more, even online.

The program matcher runs these filters in one pass.

Best MHA Programs for Your Situation

There’s no single best MHA program. There’s a best fit for your budget, experience and goal. These picks are each the strongest match in the set for one specific need.

If you want Program Why it fits
The lowest estimated tuition American College of Education MHA $8,460 for 36 credits at $235 per credit, online
A paid residency after coursework UAB residential MSHA 9-12 month paid administrative residency, no GRE or GMAT
CAHME accreditation at a low price University of Phoenix competency-based MHA $10,800 for the program, under 12 months
A flat-rate, self-paced degree WGU MHA $4,995 per six-month term, as little as 12 months
A start with no healthcare background Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences MS No prior health care experience required, $9,120 at the Oklahoma resident rate
A data-focused MHA Belhaven University MHA Data Science concentration, $22,860 estimated, online
An executive program at a research university USC executive MHA Two Los Angeles residencies, $92,105 total tuition
A program taught in Spanish Universidad Ana G. Méndez MHSA $230 per credit, $9,660 estimated for 42 credits

Public, Private and For-Profit MHA Programs

Who runs the school shapes the price and how it’s quoted.

Public universities usually publish a per-credit rate with a resident discount. University of Maryland Global Campus charges $555 per credit in state, $659 out of state and $336 for military students. Colorado State University Global charges $675 per credit with no out-of-state tuition and no fees. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center lists $288.29 per credit for Texas residents and $716.29 for non-residents.

Private nonprofit schools range the widest. Western Governors University and Southern New Hampshire University are online and moderately priced. Johns Hopkins, NYU and USC sit at the top of the price range, and their flagship MHA programs are on the CAHME list.

For-profit schools in this set price their online programs per credit or per course. Capella University charges $540 per quarter credit on its GuidedPath format, Grand Canyon University $610 per credit, and the University of Arizona Global Campus $740 per credit. For-profit status doesn’t rule out accreditation: the University of Phoenix online MHA is on the CAHME list.

How MHA Tuition Is Quoted

Schools price the same degree five different ways, and that’s why sticker prices don’t compare cleanly.

  • Per credit: the most common. Multiply by credits and add fees. Ohio University’s online MHA lists $700 per credit hour and $25,200 total tuition for Ohio residents.
  • Per quarter credit: Capella and Purdue University Global charge by the quarter credit, and their programs run 48 and 52 quarter credits. Compare the total, not the rate.
  • Per term: WGU charges $4,995 per six-month term, so finishing faster costs less.
  • Per year: Johns Hopkins lists $69,984 per year for full-time Bloomberg School tuition.
  • Flat program price: LSU Shreveport publishes $12,624 total cost with fees for its online MHA.

On this site, estimated tuition means the published per-credit rate times the credits, before fees, or the school’s own published total where it gives one.

Residencies, Internships and Capstones Compared

Field experience is the biggest difference between MHA programs that look the same on price. Here’s what real programs require.

Program What you complete
Johns Hopkins MHA Full-time, compensated 11-month administrative residency in year two
USC MHA 1,000-hour administrative residency under a senior-level manager
UAB residential MSHA 9-12 month paid administrative residency after coursework
Grand Canyon University MSHA 150-hour practicum and an evidence-based project
Samford University online MHA 120-hour internship, or a leadership project with an executive mentor if you have 5+ years of experience
University of Arizona MHM Capstone field project for a healthcare organization

A long residency adds months, but it’s the closest thing to a first management job. If you’re already working in health care, a project capstone at your own employer does more for you than a second internship.

Concentrations You Can Choose

Program titles rarely tell you the specialty. Concentrations on this list cover most corners of health care management, including some you won’t find in a general MBA.

  • Long-term care and aging: Long-Term Care Administration, Aging Services, Memory Care and Senior Services.
  • Data: Health Informatics and Analytics, Health Data Analytics, Data Science in Health Care and Analytics (MHA Plus, STEM-designated).
  • Quality and operations: Quality and Patient Safety, Operations Management and Project Management.
  • Clinical settings: Medical Laboratory Management, Radiology and Oncology.
  • Ethics and newer fields: Clinical and Organizational Ethics, and Artificial Intelligence and Human Flourishing in Health.

Long-term care is the concentration most worth planning around, because the BLS notes that all states require licensure for nursing home administrators, with requirements that vary by state. The nursing home administrator license guide explains how that works.

MHA Programs by State

Online programs make your state matter less, but it still sets your tuition at public schools and decides which campus programs you can reach. The state pages list every program in each state: see Texas, California, Florida and New York, or browse all states.

What an MHA Program Leads to

The BLS says medical and health services managers typically need a bachelor’s degree, that some employers prefer a master’s, and that advancement to top executive positions may require one. That’s the case for the MHA: it’s the degree for moving up. The BLS puts the 2025 median pay for these managers at $123,860 a year. The careers guide covers the jobs, and Is an MHA Worth It? weighs the cost against the payoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many MHA Programs Are There in the U.S.?

This site tracks 452 programs at 312 schools. Of those, 216 carry an MHA-style title (MHA, MHSA or MSHA) at 167 schools. The rest are MS, MBA, MPH and MPA degrees with a healthcare administration focus.

What Is the Largest MHA Program?

By master's awards in health administration fields in 2022-23 (IPEDS), Western Governors University is the largest at 1,796, followed by the University of Phoenix at 808 and Capella University at 573. All three are online.

Which MHA Programs Pay You During the Residency?

Residential programs with post-coursework residencies are the ones to look at. UAB's residential MSHA ends with a 9-12 month paid administrative residency, and the Johns Hopkins MHA's second year is a full-time, compensated 11-month residency with faculty preceptors.

Are There MHA Programs in Texas?

Yes. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center offers an online MSHA at $288.29 per credit for Texas residents, an estimated $10,378 for 36 credits before fees. See all programs on the Texas MHA programs page.
