MHA No GRE: How Common It Is

If you’re looking for an MHA with no GRE, you have plenty of company and plenty of choice. Across the 452 health administration master’s programs on this site, 202 either don’t ask for the GRE or GMAT or waive it. Those 202 sit at 152 schools in 41 states, and 121 of them can be taken online.

The test-free list isn’t a list of weaker programs. 84 of the 202 are covered by CAHME accreditation, and they include residential programs with long administrative residencies, such as UAB’s MSHA and USC’s MHA. The waivable programs spell out what stands in for a score: a GPA floor, years of experience or prior coursework.

Three Kinds of Test Policy

Schools describe their testing rules in three ways, and each means something different for you:

  • No test. The school doesn’t want scores. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center says “GRE/GMAT not required.” UAB’s executive MSHA says “No admission test required.” George Mason’s online MHA says GRE/GMAT scores have been “no longer required since 2017.” 158 programs in this set fall here, and that group includes the “optional” policies, where you can send scores but nobody needs them.
  • Waivable. The test is the default, but you can skip it by meeting a condition: a GPA, years of experience, prior coursework or a prior degree. 44 programs work this way.
  • Required. A small number of programs still require a score from everyone. Tulane’s online MHA lists the GMAT or MCAT.

The difference between “optional” and “waivable” trips people up. Optional means no one needs a score. Waivable means you need one unless you qualify, so check the condition before you assume you’re exempt.

MHA No GRE Programs by the Numbers

Estimated tuition across the 202 programs (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees, or the school’s published total) runs from $10,378 to $125,510, with a median of $29,700. Per-credit rates run from $288.29 to $2,591. The median program is 42 credits, against 39 across the whole site, and 82 of the 202 list a residency or internship requirement.

By degree family, there are 112 MHA-family programs, 50 MBAs, 33 MS programs, 4 MPH programs and 3 MPAs. The MHA-family programs carry most of the CAHME coverage: 70 of the 112.

How GRE Waivers Work

Waivable programs spell out the condition. They fall into four groups.

GPA. Loma Linda doesn’t require the GRE for applicants meeting its 3.0 GPA minimum and requires it below that. LSU Shreveport offers a GMAT route (minimum 450) for applicants below its GPA thresholds. Florida A&M accepts a GRE (300) or GMAT (600) as an alternative to its 3.0 GPA requirement. Grand Canyon University’s MBA requires a GMAT (500) or GRE (300) only from applicants with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.8.

Experience. Rush University’s executive track requires the GRE but waives it with five years of relevant health care experience. Wichita State’s MBA waives the GMAT or GRE for three or more years of managerial experience, a U.S. master’s degree or a qualifying GPA. The University of North Florida encourages a GRE or GMAT for applicants without professional healthcare administration experience.

Coursework. The University of Florida’s residential MHA requires the GRE only from applicants without three quantitative college courses (9+ credits, grade B or better).

Where your degree came from. College of Staten Island waives the GMAT or GRE for CSI or AACSB-school graduates with an undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or higher. The University of Saint Francis-Fort Wayne requires it only for bachelor’s degrees from non-regionally accredited institutions.

UT Arlington stacks several routes: its GMAT or GRE requirement (30th percentile or greater) is waivable for a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 undergraduate hours, a graduate degree, five or more years of healthcare management experience, or UTA alumni with a 3.2 GPA.

When Sending Scores Still Helps

Optional doesn’t always mean irrelevant. The University of Miami says scores may help with merit scholarships. UNLV says GRE scores above the 50th percentile can offset a GPA below 3.0. East Tennessee State encourages scores from applicants with a GPA below 3.20, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center recommends the GRE below a 3.0.

If your GPA is strong, skip the test. If it sits near a school’s threshold, a decent score can be the difference, and it costs you one exam date.

CAHME-Accredited Programs With No GRE

CAHME accredits graduate healthcare management programs against measurable, competency-based criteria, across MHA, MBA, MS and MPH degrees. 84 no-GRE programs carry it, and they span every format:

  • Residential with a paid residency. UAB’s MSHA pairs 21 months on campus with a 9-12 month paid administrative residency. USC’s MHA requires a 1,000-hour administrative residency under a senior-level manager.
  • Online. Wichita State, George Mason, Des Moines University (“GRE not required”) and FIU (“not required”) all run CAHME-accredited online programs.
  • Executive. UAB’s executive format and CU Denver’s Executive MBA both skip the test. See executive MHA programs for more.

Confirm any program’s current status with the CAHME checker or the full CAHME-accredited MHA programs list.

What an MHA Degree Is, With or Without the GRE

A Master of Health Administration prepares you for the work the Bureau of Labor Statistics describes for medical and health services managers: developing goals for the efficiency and quality of healthcare services, keeping a facility compliant with laws and regulations, preparing and monitoring budgets, and recruiting, training and supervising staff. The degree is the same whether you took a test to get in. What differs is how the school decides you’re ready, and schools without the GRE judge you on the rest of your file.

The University of Michigan-Flint, for example, wants a bachelor’s in a health- or business-related field, or a bachelor’s in another field plus at least two years of health sector work experience. CU Denver’s MBA in Health Administration asks applicants with a GPA under 3.30 or fewer than 3 years of full-time professional experience to submit an additional statement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says health administration, nursing and business are common majors for medical and health services managers, that advancement to top executive positions may require a master’s degree, and that the median annual wage was $123,860 in May 2025. See the MHA requirements guide for the full admissions picture.

How to Choose a No-GRE Program

  • Read the exact wording. “Not required,” “optional,” “temporarily suspended” and “waivable” each mean something different.
  • Check your GPA against the threshold. 3.0 is the common line, with ETSU at 3.20 and College of Staten Island at 3.2 for its waiver.
  • Count your experience. Rush, Wichita State’s MBA and UT Arlington all accept years of experience in place of a score.
  • Don’t trade CAHME for convenience. 84 CAHME programs skip the test, so you rarely have to choose.
  • Price it. Texas Tech, LSU Shreveport and Missouri State all come in at $14,904 or less in estimated tuition at resident rates.

Run your GPA, budget and format through the program matcher, or browse the online MHA programs list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Any CAHME-Accredited MHA Programs Skip the GRE?

Yes, 84 of them. Examples include UAB's residential MSHA ("GRE/GMAT not required"), Wichita State's online MHA ("GRE not required"), George Mason's online MHA (no GRE or GMAT since 2017) and USC's on-campus MHA ("GRE/GMAT not required").

What GPA Do You Need to Skip the GRE?

Where a school sets one, it's usually 3.0. Loma Linda waives the GRE for applicants meeting the 3.0 GPA minimum and requires it below that. Touro University in New York treats a GMAT or GRE as one option for applicants below a 3.0. College of Staten Island sets its waiver at a 3.2 for CSI or AACSB-school graduates.

Can Work Experience Replace the GRE?

At several schools. Rush University waives its GRE requirement for executive-track applicants with five years of relevant health care experience. Wichita State's MBA waives the GMAT or GRE for three or more years of managerial experience. UT Arlington waives it for five or more years of healthcare management experience.

Should You Send Scores if They're Optional?

Only if they help. The University of Miami says scores aren't required but may help with merit scholarships, and UNLV says GRE scores above the 50th percentile can offset a GPA below 3.0.

Which MHA Programs Still Require a Test?

Few. Tulane's online MHA lists the GMAT or MCAT, and some programs require a GRE or GMAT unless you qualify for a waiver, such as UT Arlington (30th percentile or greater) and Grand Canyon University's MBA for applicants with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.8.
