What Online MHA Programs Are

An online MHA is the same master’s in health administration a school teaches on campus, delivered through courses you take from home. You get the same degree title. What changes is how you get field experience, how often you have to travel, and sometimes the price.

There are 294 online MHA programs and related healthcare administration master’s at 238 schools on this site. That’s the largest single format. The mix: 126 carry an MHA-style title, 93 are healthcare MBAs, 67 are MS degrees, and 4 each are MPH and MPA degrees. Some schools run the same program both ways, so 54 of these online programs also have a campus version and 42 a hybrid version.

Accreditation is where online programs thin out. Of the 294, 56 are on the CAHME accredited list, and 51 of those are MHA-titled. If CAHME matters to you, that’s your real shortlist.

Who an Online MHA Suits

The online format is built for people already working. That’s most MHA students, and it’s why admission rules lean on experience. Several online programs set a floor: the UIC online MHA asks for 3+ years in a healthcare setting, and the UCF online executive MHA wants three years of healthcare experience including one in leadership.

It suits you if you’re a nurse, therapist, coordinator or supervisor who wants to move into management without losing a paycheck. The BLS notes that employers may require experience in an administrative or clinical role, and that advancement to top executive positions may require a master’s. An online MHA lets you build both at once.

It’s a harder fit if you have no healthcare work history. Most online programs end with a capstone or a short practicum rather than a long paid residency, so you could finish with the degree but little management experience. Some programs cover this: the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Radford University add a practicum only for students without qualifying healthcare experience.

Online MHA Costs and Credits in Numbers

Online programs run a little shorter and less expensive than the full list.

  • Credits: the median is 36. MHA-titled online programs have a median of 40.
  • Per-credit rate: the median is $685 across 199 programs, from $235 to $2,591.
  • Estimated tuition: the median is $25,200 across 201 programs, the published per-credit rate times credits before fees, or the school’s published total.
  • Tests: 121 programs don’t require the GRE or GMAT or let you waive it.
  • Field work: 72 programs build in a residency, internship, practicum or field experience.

The spread is wide. American College of Education comes to $8,460. The NYU online MHA comes to $116,595 at $2,591 per credit.

All 294 Online MHA Programs

Filter by format, accreditation, admission tests and state; tick up to three programs to compare them side by side.

294 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed September 2026. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; "resident rate" means the school charges nonresidents more. CAHME status comes from CAHME's accredited-program list.

How to Choose an Online MHA

Online programs compete on price and convenience, so the differences hide in the details. Check these before you apply.

  • CAHME status. Only 56 of the 294 online programs are on the list. Filter first if you want it, using the CAHME checker.
  • Campus visits. Some online programs require immersions or residencies. Price in the travel.
  • Where you live. Public schools often charge non-residents more, even for online courses.
  • Field requirement. Find out if you’ll need a practicum and whether you can do it at your current employer.
  • Pace. Eight-week terms and one-course-at-a-time formats change how your weeks look. The University of Phoenix online MHA runs one 5- to 6-week course at a time.
  • Total cost. Run the whole degree through the MHA cost calculator, fees included.

The Best-Value CAHME-Accredited Online Programs

If you want CAHME accreditation and a low price, the ranked list above has 12 options, and each low-cost one comes with a catch worth knowing.

  • The University of Phoenix competency-based MHA is $10,800 for the program, the lowest on the CAHME list. You’ll need three years of healthcare leadership or management experience in the past 10 years to get in.
  • Wichita State’s online MHA comes to an estimated $15,821 at one rate for every state, but its course fees are extra and it ends with a comprehensive exam.
  • UNC Wilmington’s $17,033 total applies to North Carolina residents only.
  • American Public University System’s MSHA is an estimated $18,800 at $470 per credit, or $250 per credit at its military rate.
  • The Texas State University executive MHA is $20,080 for the program, and 5+ years of healthcare management experience can earn you 6 hours of prior learning credit.

When an Online MHA Still Means Showing Up

“Online” doesn’t always mean you never travel. These programs build in-person time into the degree, and it’s worth knowing before you enroll.

Program In-person requirement CAHME
NYU online MHA 2.5-day immersion in New York City during the second term Yes
Austin Peay State University MHA Two 2-day residencies, the first weekend and the final semester Yes
Lipscomb University online MHA In-person integration experience on the Nashville campus at the end of each semester Yes (school on probation)
Concordia University-Irvine MHA Twice-yearly professional development workshops on campus, keynote also livestreamed Yes
La Sierra University online healthcare MBA Two in-person residential conferences No
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences MHA Full-time 10-week summer residency, or a management project if you work full time in health care Yes

Short immersions are a feature for many students, since they’re where you meet your cohort face to face. But they cost you flights, hotels and time off.

Out-of-State Tuition for Online MHA Programs

This catches people out. Many public universities still charge non-residents more for online courses, and the gap can be large.

Others charge everyone the same. Wichita State University’s online MHA charges $367.92 per credit hour, the in-state rate regardless of residency, plus course fees of $92-$127 per credit hour. Austin Peay offers an E-Rate for out-of-state students taking all courses online. Radford lists $690 per credit in state and $710 out of state, fees included.

Practicums You Can Do Where You Live

The field requirement is the part of an online MHA you can’t do from your laptop. The good news is that most programs let you complete it locally.

One-Year and Accelerated Online MHA Programs

If speed matters most, a handful of online programs finish in about a year. West Coast University’s online MHA runs 30 credits in 8 months on its fastest pace or 12 months accelerated, at $23,850 total tuition. The University of Saint Francis-Fort Wayne MHA is 27 credits in 1 year at an estimated $14,850. LSU Shreveport estimates 12 months full time and publishes $12,624 total cost with fees.

The trade-off is load. Fitting a master’s into a year while working full time means several courses at once. See the full list of accelerated and one-year MHA programs.

Executive Online MHA Programs

Executive MHA programs are for experienced managers, and several are fully online. The UCF online executive MHA charges $772.69 per credit hour including fees, an estimated $33,998. The University of Iowa executive track asks for at least 5 years of full-time work experience. The University of Cincinnati online executive MHA prefers two years in a health care setting and offers Fast Track and Extended Track options. All three are on the CAHME list. See more in executive MHA programs.

Online MHA vs Online MS and MBA

The degree title changes the numbers more than the format does.

Online degree family Programs On CAHME list Median credits Median estimated tuition
MHA, MHSA and MSHA 126 51 40 $27,300
MS in healthcare administration 67 3 36 $22,500
MBA in healthcare 93 1 36 $26,208

The online MHA is the only group where CAHME accreditation is common. An online MS in healthcare administration has the lowest median estimated tuition of the three, and the MBA keeps your options open outside health care. The MHA vs MBA guide lays out the trade-offs, and the all MHA programs list shows campus options too.
