MHA vs MPH: Health Administration or Public Health?
MHA vs MPH: Which Master's Fits Your Healthcare Career?
In the MHA vs MPH choice, the MHA trains you to run healthcare organizations, and the MPH trains you to improve health across whole populations. Only 9 MPH programs on this site carry a management focus, against 216 MHA-type programs, and 122 of those MHAs are covered by CAHME. If you want both, 8 schools offer a joint MHA/MPH-type degree. For pure public health programs, compare MPH options at MPH Programs.

MHA vs MPH: Running Health Care or Improving Public Health
The MHA vs MPH question comes down to scale. A Master of Health Administration prepares you to run a healthcare organization: a hospital department, a clinic, a health system. A Master of Public Health prepares you to improve health across a community or population, through research, policy, education and programs.
The two meet in the middle. Plenty of MPH programs offer a management concentration, and plenty of MHA programs teach population health. But the core of each degree points in a different direction, and so do the jobs.
The numbers show how lopsided the overlap is. There are 216 MHA-type programs (MHA, MHSA, MSHA and equivalents) at 167 schools, and 9 MPH programs at 8 schools whose focus is health management or administration. If you want a general MPH in epidemiology, biostatistics or community health, that’s a different search: the sister site MPH Programs compares them.
What You Study in Each Degree
An MHA keeps the organization at the center. Concentrations across MHA programs include Health Care Compliance and Privacy, Financial Management, Operations Management, Quality and Patient Safety, Long-Term Care Administration and Health Informatics. There’s also Population Health Management at Maryville University, which is about as close as an MHA gets to public health.
An MPH keeps the population at the center. The management-focused MPHs on this site show that through their concentrations: Health Services Administration at the University of Arizona, Healthcare Management at Boston University, and Health Policy and Administration at Concordia University-Nebraska. Concordia’s MPH also offers Community Health Education and Medication Safety and Pharmacovigilance, which tells you how far the MPH reaches beyond management.
The MPH also brings its own required experiences. Five of the nine management MPH listings name an Applied Practice Experience or an integrative learning experience, including Harvard, Yale, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and UTHealth Houston.
Accreditation: CAHME vs CEPH
Each degree has its own accreditor, and knowing which is which saves you from comparing the wrong things.
CEPH, the Council on Education for Public Health, accredits schools of public health and public health programs outside those schools. It’s the accreditor to check for any MPH.
CAHME, the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education, accredits graduate programs in healthcare management, healthcare quality and safety, and population health. CAHME says those programs may offer the MHA, MBA, MHSA, MPH, MS and other degrees. So a management-focused MPH can hold CAHME accreditation too.
On this site, 122 of 216 MHA-type programs are covered by CAHME. Among the 9 management MPHs, 3 are: OHSU’s MPH in Health Management and Policy, UTHealth Houston’s MPH in Healthcare Management, and Boston University’s MPH with a Healthcare Management Certificate (listed with probation status). Look up any program with the CAHME checker or browse CAHME-accredited MHA programs.
Every Management-Focused MPH on This Site
These nine MPH programs sit in the healthcare administration set because their focus is management, policy or health services administration.
| Program | Format | Credits | Cost as published | Field work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Arizona MPH, Health Services Administration | Hybrid, online | 42 | 5-unit internship | |
| Concordia University-Nebraska MPH, Health Policy and Administration | Online | 39 | $550 per credit | 75-hour practicum |
| UMass Lowell MPH in Healthcare Management | Online, hybrid | 42 | $610 per credit | 6-credit practicum |
| OHSU MPH in Health Management and Policy | On campus | 60 | $486 per credit (resident) | Applied Practice Experience |
| UTHealth Houston MPH in Healthcare Management | On campus, hybrid, online | 45 | 3-credit practicum | |
| Yale MPH in Health Care Management | On campus | $57,256 per year | Applied Practice Experience | |
| Boston University MPH with Healthcare Management Certificate | On campus | 42 | $73,024 per year full time | 240-hour practicum |
| Harvard MPH in Health Management (MPH-45) | On campus | 45 | $77,400 per year | Applied practice and integrative learning |
| Harvard MPH in Health Management (MPH-65) | On campus | 65 | $67,760 per year | Summer practicum |
Blank cells mean the school didn’t list that figure in a comparable form.
Harvard’s MPH-45 is the executive-style option here: it asks for a bachelor’s plus five or more years of relevant health experience, or a health-related master’s plus two years, and runs one year full time.
Cost and Length Compared
The two degrees are the same length at the median: 42 credits for MHA-type programs and 42 for the management MPHs.
On price, only three of the MPHs have an estimated tuition (published per-credit rate times credits, before fees): $21,450 at Concordia University-Nebraska, $25,620 at UMass Lowell and $29,160 at OHSU (resident rate). MHA-type programs have a median estimate of $29,000 across 134 programs, from $8,460 at the low end to $121,872 at the high end.
The bigger cost story is the MHA’s range. With 216 programs to choose from, you can find a CAHME-covered online MHA like Wichita State’s at an estimated $15,821. The MPH side has far fewer options, and several of the nine are at private schools that price by the year. Field Work: Residency vs Practicum
Both degrees send you into the field, in different ways.
In the MHA, it’s usually an administrative residency or internship inside a healthcare organization. 102 of 216 MHA-type programs require one. At the far end, UAB’s residential MSHA adds a required 9 to 12 month paid administrative residency after 21 months of coursework.
In the MPH, it’s a practicum or applied practice experience, and it’s often shorter: Concordia’s practicum is 75 hours and Boston University’s is 240 hours. The University of Arizona goes further, with a 5-unit Health Services Administration internship that you present at its MPH Internship Conference. Whichever degree you pick, the placement is the setting you’ll know best when you graduate, so match it to the job you want next.
Public Health Administration Jobs and Pay
The BLS reports pay by occupation, and the occupations an MHA and an MPH lead to overlap only partly.
Medical and health services managers are the MHA’s home ground. The BLS says they typically need a bachelor’s, some employers prefer a master’s, and the work includes regulatory compliance, finances and billing, hiring and supervising staff, and scheduling. The May 2025 median was $123,860, with the bottom 10% at $73,390 or less and the top 10% at $224,340 or more.
Epidemiologists are the classic MPH job. They investigate patterns and causes of disease and injury, typically need at least a master’s, and the BLS notes that a master’s in public health with an emphasis in epidemiology is common. The 2025 median was $87,220.
Health education specialists teach people about behaviors that promote wellness. They typically need at least a bachelor’s, and the 2025 median was $64,070.
Public health administration, meaning the management of health departments and public health programs, sits between these. An MPH with a management concentration or an MHA with population health coursework can both lead there. For more on management roles, see the healthcare administration careers guide.
MHA/MPH Dual Degrees
If your goal really does straddle both, a joint degree can save you from choosing. These schools offer an MHA/MPH-type combination:
- UAB: MSHA/MPH
- University of Georgia: MHA/MPH with a Health Policy and Management concentration
- IU Indianapolis: MHA/MPH
- Des Moines University: MHA/MPH, 78 semester hours combined
- University of Utah: MHA/Master of Public Health
- Barry University: MS in Health Services Administration/MPH
- Saginaw Valley State University: MHA-MPH dual degree
- Missouri State University: MPH/MHA
Other combinations pair the MPH with an MBA, such as Yale’s accelerated MBA/MPH in Health Care Management (22 months) and the Johns Hopkins MPH/MBA. If the MBA is your other option, read MHA vs MBA and the MHA/MBA dual degree guide.
Which Degree Should You Choose?
- You want to run a hospital department, clinic or health system: choose the MHA. There are 216 programs, 122 covered by CAHME.
- You want to study disease, design community programs or work in epidemiology: choose an MPH, and check that it’s CEPH-accredited. Compare them at MPH Programs.
- You want public health administration specifically: a management-focused MPH, such as Arizona’s Health Services Administration or OHSU’s Health Management and Policy, gives you both sides.
- You want both credentials: look at the eight joint programs above, and budget for the extra credits.
- You already have years of health experience: Harvard’s MPH-45 on the MPH side, or an executive MHA on the MHA side.
